Entities in action: Commerce.module rocks, Drupal 7 Style

Drupal has been powering great ecommerce sites for a long time, but I can honestly say that the experience has never been particularly pleasant.  Going from ECommerce to Ubercart did make things better back in the day, but now, years later, even Ubercart is starting to show it's age.

Born in Drupal Gardens, Sweet-Tallulah.com grows into her own

Drupal 7 + Commerce = Clean & Easy

Last spring we worked with Rachelle Guiragossian of Sweet Tallulah Baking and Catering to launch her first website. To minimize the time, effort, and cost of this we chose to build the site with Acquia's free hosted Drupal service, Drupal Gardens.

Maintenance, Your Website and Your Business/NGO

The Importance of Website Maintenance

It is unfortunate that there are people out there that don't think that maintenance is necessary - or that sloppy maintenance is acceptable. With a vehicle, it's a lot more obvious - if you don't maintain it, it will eventually stop taking you where you want to go. Or it may take you where you do not want to go.

Drupal Gardens goes to Dominican Republic: Teaching Tool for Pilot Program

ThinkDrop/MACILE Internet Curriculum Pilot Program to use Drupal Gardens to teach kids web development in Itabo, DR

We are pleased to announce an agreement between ThinkDrop Consulting and Acquia regarding using Drupal Gardens as a teaching tool for the ThinkDrop and MACILE after-school Pilot Program on the internet and web development.

Drupal Gardens: A Tool for Teaching Drupal

Drupal Gardens is a fantastic tool to get people engaged in Drupal that have no prior experience in web development and a great way to introduce the concepts of web development. By creating a simple way to build out sites, you can really get your hands dirty as you learn.

By removing the requirement to setup your own server, they remove the requirement to know how to use FTP or SSH, Linux file systems and permissions, databases, and at least enough PHP to edit a settings file. Drupal Gardens significantly lowers the intellectual and financial barriers of entry for individuals for anyone interested in how the internet works. It is a great tool for those who want to start a web development career or just want a website and have enough time and initiative to learn to do it themselves.

Why Drupal?

Drupal is not the only Open-Source content management system out there, so why did we settle on it? Choosing technology tools is a balance between skill set and objectives. Drupal is an obvious choice for ThinkDrop's Pilot Program because it is what we specialize in and know front to back. But what else does Drupal bring to the Pilot Program?

Upgrading between Drupal Alpha releases: Not supported, but worth a shot!

The first stable release of Drupal 7 is quite a ways out, but here at ThinkDrop, we like to experiment with the latest version for a few reasons. First, its the only way to get familiar with the new software. Second, its the only way to find and fix bugs in core. Using Drupal pre-beta is extremely risky, because Drupal 7 does not support 7-to-7 upgrades until the first Beta is released. When we launched the first version of ThinkDrop.net, Drupal 7 alpha 3 was the latest release, so I went ahead and gave it a shot. I was able to get a basic site up and running on this version without many problems. The main issue here was going to be upgrading to the next releases.

In case you didn't hear... Drupal powers 1% of the Web

So I wanted to link to something about Dries' announcement at DrupalConSF about how Drupal now powers 1% of the entire web and couldn't find anything but tweets and mentions of that fact, so I figured I'd write a blog about it! It really is a staggering statistic. I commented on Dries' original blog post about the idea for the crawler asking for the juicy details. According to the slides, the crawler scanned the Alexa top 1,000,000 sites, and determined (somehow) that they were Drupal sites.
